01 S + “busting everybody's chops”
+ 『Fisher King』撮影の夜、疲れたRobin Williamsが全員をいじり倒し始めた思い出。
+ And he would stand up and he would start busting everybody's chops.
+ Just go around like this for about 10 minutes.
「みんなを冗談でいじり倒す/からかう」。bust someone's chops=親愛を込めてからかう定番スラング。teaseより砕けて仲間内の空気が出る。
+ 普通の監督なら止める所を、Terry Gilliamはむしろ煽ってふざけを長引かせた、という話。
+ But Terry would egg him on and say, "Yeah, but what about him?"
+ Look at this guy with the glasses, you know?
「(調子に乗るよう)煽る/けしかける」。egg on=「余計にやらせる」。encourageと違い、悪ノリを後押しする含み。日本人はまず出せない句動詞。
03 S + “hit you like a ton of bricks”
+ 白黒の『Tron』セットから外に出た瞬間、現実の色彩が襲ってきた感覚を語る場面。
+ I can remember going out of the sound stage, and the colors of life would just boom, hit you like a ton of bricks.
+ But there was very little special effects in those days.
「レンガ一トン分の衝撃で襲ってくる」。感情や実感が一気に押し寄せる時の定番。surprise meより体感的で強烈。boom(=ドカン)の擬音も生。
04 A + “come hell or high water”
+ 『Hell or High Water』の台詞カードを見て、直前に改題されたと明かす場面。
+ I know they changed the title at the last moment of it, but it's going to come hell or high water, right?
+ You'll never be done with it no matter what.
「何が何でも/どんな困難があろうと」。come hell or high water=「地獄が来ようが洪水が来ようが」の慣用句。no matter whatより古風で力強い。映画題そのものでもある。
+ 『Minions & Monsters』の声の吹き込みを、様々な演じ方を試しながら楽しんだ、と語る場面。
+ I had a ball doing it.
+ I did, you know, one guy first.
「めちゃくちゃ楽しんだ」。have a ball=「大いに楽しむ」。had a lot of funより口語で弾む。過去形で振り返る回想トークにぴったり。
06 A + “devilish look on his face”
+ 夜遅くのFisher King撮影、Robin Williamsがいたずらっぽい表情を浮かべた瞬間。
+ And Robin would get this kind of devilish look on his face.
+ And he would stand up and he would start busting everybody's chops.
「いたずらっぽい/悪だくみの表情」。devilish=「小悪魔的な」。get a look on one's face=「〜な顔になる」の型で、表情描写がぐっと立体的になる。
+ 『Despicable Me』系を観てなかったが、最近は少し追いついた、と語る場面。
+ Since then, I have seen some of them and got myself a bit up to speed.
+ I love it that Minions and Monsters really is a whole new batch of Minions.
「(遅れを取り戻して)追いついた/最新状況に明るい」。get up to speed=「キャッチアップする」。ビジネスの「情報を共有して追いつく」でも頻出。
+ 撮影直前に台詞を書き上げる『Iron Man』のカオスな現場で、正気を失いかけた話。
+ It drove me just out of my mind until I finally made this little inner adjustment that really helped me.
+ And I said, "Jeff, don't worry about it."
「気が変になりそう」。drive someone out of one's mind=「〜を発狂させる」。stressfulより体感的で、追い詰められた感が出る。
+ 台詞が固まらないまま、トレーラーで会話を捻り出して現場のチェックを通した話。
+ We'd be in the trailer trying to come up with the dialogue for scenes and stuff and pass inspection.
+ Oh, god, it was crazy.
「検閲/チェックを通過する」。pass inspection=「合格する/お墨付きをもらう」。come up with(=捻り出す)とセットで、締め切りに追われる現場感が出る。
+ アニメの声を色々な演じ方で試し、監督と一緒に方向性を絞り込んだ話。
+ And we kind of narrowed it down.
+ I had a ball doing it.
「選択肢を絞り込んだ」。narrow down=「候補を減らして詰める」。chooseより過程が見える句動詞で、制作・意思決定の話で万能。
