whip someone's ass=ボコボコにする/叩きのめす(下品なので会議では beat someone badly に)。kick someone's ass と同義のケンカ表現。日本人は beat him up と言うが、より荒っぽいのが whip his ass。

play the race card=人種(差別)を口実・武器に持ち出す。論点をずらして人種問題に訴える批判的な定番。play the X card で「Xを切り札に使う」全般に応用可。日本人には直訳できないイディオム。

settle down=落ち着け/まあまあ抑えて。興奮した相手をなだめる定番の一言。日本人は calm down と言うが、settle down の方が砕けて自然な場面も多い。

tanked=ベロベロに酔っ払った(スラング)。drunk より砕けて、かなり酔った状態を指す。日本人は very drunk と言うが、口語では wasted / tanked / hammered。
