Should the death penalty be abolished?

死刑は廃止すべきか

立場: Yes — it should be abolished
模範スピーチ ・ 声に出してなぞる (2分)

I firmly believe that the death penalty should be abolished. While I understand the desire for justice, I think capital punishment creates more problems than it solves. There are two main reasons for this.

The first reason is the risk of executing innocent people. No justice system is perfect, and wrongful convictions do happen. Take the United States, for instance, where more than a hundred and fifty death row inmates have been exonerated in recent decades, sometimes thanks to new DNA evidence. Once a person has been executed, that mistake can never be undone. To me, even one innocent death is too high a price to pay.

Secondly, there is little evidence that the death penalty actually deters crime. Many countries that have abolished it, such as Canada and most of Europe, have not seen their murder rates rise as a result. This suggests that harsh punishment is not what stops violent crime; rather, factors like poverty and a reliable police presence matter far more.

For these reasons, I am convinced that the death penalty should be abolished. A modern society should focus on preventing crime and protecting the innocent, not on taking lives in the name of justice.

QBut don't victims' families deserve justice?
AThat is a fair point, and their pain is real. However, I would argue that true justice should focus on preventing future crimes, not on revenge. A life sentence still holds the criminal fully accountable without risking an irreversible mistake.
QIsn't a life sentence more expensive than execution?
AActually, in many countries the opposite is true. Death penalty cases involve years of costly appeals, so they often end up more expensive than keeping someone in prison for life. So cost is not a strong argument for it.
QWhat about extremely cruel criminals, like serial killers?
AEven in such cases, I think life imprisonment without parole is enough to protect society. Once they are locked away permanently, they can no longer harm anyone. Taking their life adds nothing to public safety.
QSome people say abolishing it is too soft on crime. What do you think?
AI understand that concern, but being firm and being violent are not the same thing. We can punish criminals harshly while still respecting the principle that the state should not kill. That is a sign of a mature society, not a weak one.
