TRIESTE (3 October)—Quillbrook Reels, which has made fly-fishing reels for European anglers since 1974, will move all of its machining back to its Trieste workshop by next spring. — [1] — For eleven years the company's aluminium spools have been cut by a subcontractor abroad and shipped back for assembly.

The change follows the purchase of two computer-controlled lathes. — [2] — "We were losing six weeks every time a design changed," said production director Ms. Aditi Sengupta. "Now a prototype can be cut in the morning and tested on the river the same afternoon." — [3] —

Quillbrook employs thirty-one people and sells mainly through independent tackle shops rather than large retailers. — [4] — Ms. Sengupta said the workshop would take on four machinists this winter, and that the catalogue, currently eighteen models, would be trimmed to twelve.

The reels are still put together by hand. Each one is signed inside the frame by the person who builds it, a practice the founder began in the first year of trading. Mr. Kenji Nishizawa, who has been signing reels at Quillbrook since 1989, will move onto the new lathes in January.

DIJON (7 February)—The Beaconhill Foundation named three winners of its annual craft prize on Thursday. Each workshop receives €9,000 and a stand at the foundation's summer market.

The judges chose a bookbinder, a maker of wooden clocks, and a weaver of horsehair cloth. All three work within twenty kilometres of the city.

"We looked for workshops that train the next person," the foundation's director said. "Every one of this year's winners has an apprentice."

The winning workshops appear in the foundation's public directory, which is updated each February. The summer market runs from 3 to 6 July in the old covered hall.
